Our team recently created Unfamiliar, a hi-lo reader. We created this high interest graphic novel to appeal to a diverse student base and to showcase the distinguished writing, editing, design, and illustration capabilities that Westchester K-12 Publishing Services provides for educational publishers of all sizes.
Graphic novels have emerged as effective tools to help struggling and reluctant readers. Vivid illustrations draw students in, allowing them to create meaning and make inferences. The narrative text is easily understood, so students who might struggle through traditional texts enjoy the satisfaction of completing a book while discovering relevant storylines. Finally, graphic novels can serve as windows and mirrors: materials students see themselves in and, at the same time, materials that open a portal to others’ experiences.
Anne Riccio, our Literacy and Humanities Sr. Supervising Editor, covers some of these concepts, which form the basis for Unfamiliar, in her summary of the July 2018 International Literacy Association conference.
